What MERV Ratings Do Not Tell You
MERV is useful, but it is not a complete measure of filter quality.
The rating does not tell you how sturdy the frame is, how well the filter fits inside the return, how evenly the pleats are constructed, or how the filter will perform after it begins collecting dust. Two filters can carry the same MERV rating and still differ in construction, durability, surface area, and overall performance.
Proper sizing also matters. Air can bypass a highly efficient filter if the filter is too small or does not seal properly in the cabinet. In that situation, the MERV number printed on the filter is not doing much good.
Filter thickness is another separate issue. A four-inch filter is not automatically a higher MERV filter than a one-inch filter. Thicker filters generally contain more media and may hold more debris before needing replacement, but thickness alone does not determine filtration efficiency.
In other words, do not buy by MERV rating alone. Consider the filterās dimensions, construction, thickness, manufacturer, and replacement requirements too.
Can a Higher MERV Rating Restrict Airflow?

As air passes through a filter, the filter creates resistance. HVAC professionals refer to this resistance as pressure drop. A filter with dense media may create more pressure drop than the system was designed to handle, especially in a restrictive one-inch filter setup.
